Ultrasounds Q & A

What are ultrasounds?

Ultrasounds (also called sonograms) use sound waves to create images of the reproductive organs or a developing pregnancy. Unlike X-rays, they don’t use radiation. The test is quick, helpful, and widely used in women’s healthcare.

Dr. LaBrant uses ultrasounds to view the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix, and surrounding pelvic structures. During pregnancy, an ultrasound is used to check the baby’s growth, heartbeat, movement, and position.

The type of ultrasound you undergo will depend on the reason for your visit. Some patients need an abdominal ultrasound. Others need a transvaginal ultrasound, which uses a slim ultrasound wand placed gently inside the vagina for clearer pelvic images.

Why does a doctor recommend ultrasounds?

Dr. LaBrant will recommend an ultrasound to evaluate:

  • Pelvic pain
  • Abnormal bleeding
  • Missed periods
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Fibroids
  • Endometrial thickness
  • IUD placement

Ultrasound is also used to investigate symptoms that don’t have a clear cause after a less invasive exam.

Ultrasounds in early pregnancy help confirm you’re pregnant, estimate the due date, check the baby’s heartbeat, and monitor development. Later scans give more information about growth, anatomy, amniotic fluid, placenta placement, and fetal position.

Ultrasound results guide care in clear, practical ways. They help Dr. LaBrant explain what’s happening and decide what needs monitoring, treatment, and/or follow-up.

What happens during ultrasounds?

During an abdominal ultrasound, you lie on an exam table while gel is applied to your lower belly. The doctor or ultrasound technician moves a hand-held device over the skin to collect images.

During a transvaginal ultrasound, the patient lies back with support, similar to a pelvic exam. A covered, lubricated ultrasound wand enters the vagina gently. This view gives sharper images of the uterus and ovaries.

Most ultrasounds feel easy and brief. Some patients feel light pressure, especially during a transvaginal scan. The team explains the process before it begins, so patients know what to expect.

What happens after ultrasounds?

Dr. LaBrant reviews the ultrasound findings and explains the results in simple terms. Some results need no treatment. Others lead to repeat imaging, lab work, medication, or a treatment plan.

Pregnancy ultrasounds also help patients feel connected and reassured. Dr. LaBrant answers questions about growth, timing, and next steps.
