Ovarian Cyst Q & A

What is an ovarian cyst?

Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs on one or both of your ovaries, found on each side of your uterus. These cysts are common and might not be a cause for concern, since most are harmless. But cysts sometimes twist or rupture (burst open), causing serious concerns. Early detection and treatment help you avoid pain and other unpleasant symptoms.

What are the symptoms of an ovarian cyst?

An ovarian cyst can cause the following symptoms:

  • Pelvic pain
  • Dull aching
  • Sharp pain
  • Pressure, heaviness, or fullness in your belly
  • Bloating
  • Pain during sex
  • Difficulty urinating or defecating
  • Painful periods
  • Irregular periods
  • Discomfort that comes and goes

Many ovarian cysts cause no symptoms and go away on their own.

However, if a cyst ruptures, you can experience a sudden and sharp pain in your pelvic area that becomes intense. You might notice vaginal bleeding, weakness, dizziness, vomiting, or nausea.

What are the risk factors for ovarian cysts?

Things that can raise your risk of developing an ovarian cyst include:

  • Endometriosis
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
  • Abnormal cell reproduction
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Not yet reaching menopause
  • History of ovarian cysts
  • Pregnancy
  • Fertility medications
  • Hormonal disorders
  • Severe pelvic infections

Sometimes treatment is necessary to help you avoid severe complications, like ovarian torsion (twisting of your ovary), a ruptured cyst, or cancer.

How is an ovarian cyst diagnosed?

Diagnosing an ovarian cyst requires a review of your medical history and symptoms, pregnancy test, pelvic exam, and ultrasound. You might undergo a laparoscopy that uses a thin lighted scope to help Dr. LaBrant view inside your reproductive organs.

How is an ovarian cyst treated?

Your customized ovarian cyst treatment plan can include:

  • Watchful waiting
  • Medication
  • Birth control pills
  • Surgery

Fortunately, many cysts go away on their own without the need for medical intervention.

Dr. LaBrant can remove any problematic ovarian cysts before they cause complications. She follows up to ensure that symptoms subside and keeps an eye on your ovaries and other pelvic organs during routine wellness exams.

Ovarian cysts that appear after menopause have a higher likelihood of being cancerous. Dr. LaBrant will refer you to a cancer specialist if necessary.
