IUD Placement Q & A

What is IUD placement?

IUD placement is a noninvasive procedure in which Dr. LaBrant inserts a tiny T-shaped device (intrauterine device) through your vagina into your uterus to prevent pregnancy for up to 10 years, sometimes longer. She can remove this form of birth control anytime, should you decide you’d like to become pregnant. Both copper and hormonal IUDs are available.

What are the benefits of IUD placement?

An IUD is a simple, long-acting, and reversible birth control method. Once inserted, you don’t have to worry about taking a pill, wearing and replacing a patch, or coming to Dr. LaBrant’s office for a shot. IUD placement is a simple, highly effective procedure. IUDs are the second most common type of reversible birth control.

However, it’s important to note that IUDs don’t protect against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

Is IUD placement right for me?

Dr. LaBrant discusses your lifestyle and birth control preferences to determine which best suits you. She reviews your medical history and completes physical and pelvic exams. You shouldn't use an IUD if you’re pregnant, have an active STD, or have uterine cancer, cervical cancer, or unexplained vaginal bleeding.

What happens during IUD placement?

You can rest comfortably on an exam table during IUD placement, which often takes about 15 minutes (or less) to complete. Dr. LaBrant numbs the area if necessary. She uses a speculum to widen your vagina. She then inserts a copper or hormonal IUD through your vagina into your uterus, where it remains until you’re ready to have it removed.

What can I expect after IUD placement?

You might experience temporary mild discomfort, dizziness, cramping, or light spotting after IUD insertion, so you might want to take the rest of the day off from work. IUDs are safe and 99% effective at preventing pregnancy, offering peace of mind.

If you’d like to have your IUD removed to become pregnant or are interested in another form of birth control, Dr. LaBrant is here to help. She’s always available to answer questions or address concerns about your treatment.
